I am wanting a drll sharpener, was thinking a drill doctor. I can sharpen them on a grinding wheel but thinking that with a complete set of ase drills and a set of etric drills at work, and 2 set at two homes would be better to have a drill shapener. What does anyone use? Yes a little behind on sharpening drill bits so might get caught up.

I have the drill doctor. It's well worth the purchase price considering cost of bits, time wasted chasing down said bits, frustration of stopping projects due to dull bits, making new friends who need a bit sharpened and just happen to bring along a beer. Do it.

We have one in our shop, and they work fine, except on thick web drills. The split tip part works good too. I still do it by hand on a bench grinder for over 1/2" drills, but my eyes aren't that good for smaller drills anymore. We purchased it mainly for splitting the tips.

Thanks for the replys, I know that they furnish bits at work but they are junk, except for metric, but don't always have size needed so I bought a good set of Number, fractional, and letter of my own. They have been used hard sometimes on Stainless whic tears them up. I just want to take care of my stuff so have themwhen I need them.

I'm very satisfied with the Drill Doctor. When I first got it, so easy to use that I got carried away and sharpened every bit I had. My bits cut through mild and stainless steel now like they were going through butter.

My only regret is that it won't do bits over 1/2 inch - of which I have a few.

Northern tool shows a model that will go to 3/4" that doesn't look too hard on the wallet.

Drill doctor works geat. Fabbed up a few off road cars and have sharpened over 100 bits. Takes only 1 or 2 sharpenings to get the hang of it. I've got the 350. Wish it did bigger bits, but oh well. Has paid for itself over and over.

Re: Drill Doctor or another drill sharpener

My boss got one for the shop. He uses it sometimes. Most of the time he hands me the bit to dress it up on the bench grinder. Doing it free hand isn't perfect, but it does require a nack for the job. You either have it or you don't.

We deal with 314 stainless a lot in the commercial kitchens. The MAIN thing to remember is not to drill it fast. Drill it fast and the metal will case hardern and make it the worst for any drill bit to finish the job. This goes for other metals as well. Case hardening destroyes the edge on the best of bits.
