Just a rant but with quite a few posts the last couple of days ie: using 1 thru-hull for two bildge pumps, not wanting to drill aluminium transom for transducer, etc. etc. etc.
Why is everyone afaraid to drill a hole through thier boat just follow the manufacturer instructions for your accessory, use appropriate sealant for the job and drill already.;):D

i agree. but people have the impression, a screw hole is going to sink their boat. Aluminum boats are built with rivets, you have to drill a hole to get the rivet thru, and most rivets are not sealed.

I thought it was just common sense to not want to put a hole in something that would be underwater? Anyway, it took me about 5 years after buying my new boat to get comfortable with the idea...

I've run across many a boat that had what looked like Woodpeckers for owners.

Think Twice-Drill ONCE!

How does that old Norweigan saying go: "I sawed that board off twice and it's still too short".

I don't know what the previous owner done to the aluminum deep V boat that I now own. The boat was stipped when I bought it several months back, so nothing on the transom was in place. It looked like was shot with buckshot it had so many holes in it. I bolted the new transom in and sealed every hole the best I could with silicon. So far after 3 or 4 test runs with it while tinkering with/adjusting the motor it hasn't let in a drop of water.

Yes TD, that looks like you said and, that is what I am trying to avoid. I just hate to drill holes in something that is supposed to keep water out. The seaark outlaw 170 has no wood in the transom and you dont have a lot of surface area for the sealer to stick to. Call me a stickler but I try to avoid problems rather than repair them. If I have to I will drill it, but just tryin to avoid problems. But, for each his own.....Charlie :)

And everyone forgets that when your boat is at rest, the drain plug is under water as is the live well pump intake(s). Both of which will sink the boat if the plug is left out (or falls out) or a hose ruptures or comes loose in the live well system. Both are far more problematic than drilling two small holes to mount a transducer or add an overboard fitting which would be above the water line anyway.

Ayuh,....

With My Newest hulls in the 30 year old range,....
They look alot like TD's, before they're Fixed...

If it's a Fiberglass hull,... Epoxy can fix Anything...
For my tinboat,... I got a Welder,+ know how to use it....Or if there's wood under it,.. Screw it...

Re: Drill it already!!!

My boats, trucks and other stuff are tools, if a can't use them for what I bought them for then it's a waste of money. I drill, cut, weld, bolt, fiberglass, and modify as needed, if I'm afraid to use it I get rid of it.
