began a task that seemed easy enough. The front anchor pin on my alphas bellhousing is frozen and needs to be replaced because of bad threads.I cut off the ends and proceeded to drill it out without making much of a dent in it.I guess I need special drill bits or a high speed drill.Any suggestions????Charlie

Titanium drill bits or high speed steel drill bits should be hard enough. Generally, the more you pay for a drill bit, the better it is. I bought a Sears high speed drill bit some time ago and used it on some particulary hard steel plate. It stayed sharp and cut superbly...better yet than some cheaper titaniums I have now!

Charlie, you may want to try a cobalt bit, they are very effective on S.S stuff.Remeber not to drill at an extremley hi rpm,if your using a variable speed drill slow it down some and don't be shy with the oil to cool the bit.If you go too fast you will heat up the pin and in turn make it<br />" harder" than it started out.<br />hope it works out for you. Re: drilling out anchor pin

Charlie,<br />You probably already know this but just in case. In drilling out something threaded you usually end up trashing the threads. This is not a problem if you used the right size drill bit because you can re-tap the hole. Be carefull, however, because these drill bits are usually very odd sizes. Some taps come with the appropriate bit, others do not, but all good taps have the right drill size inscribed on them. If you drill out something large you might have to go to a tool supply house that caters to machine shops to get the right bit and be prepared to pay.

Re: drilling out anchor pin

thanks for the reply Don .The anchor pin is only threaded on the ends which I have already cut off.The part that I have to drill out is supposed to be able to turn through the holes in the bottom of the bellhousing,The SS&alum combo has gotten the pin frozen in place. No threads for me to be worried about, thank God.Charlie
