I have my outdrive off waiting to put a new SE106 on the boat. Since my boat was completely repowered by a PO I have no idea of the engine or drives serial #. I found out the 4bbl Roch carb is 1979 and found a partial engine serial of 425236 but the tag is cut off missing the first x digits. It's a 5.7 guessing 1979 engine 260hp maybe with Alpha One Gen 1. Boat 1994 19' Chaparral originally suppose to have 5.0L Gen 2.

Anyway with the drive off I found a number stamped into the bottom of the bell housing on the mating surface flange that the seal would go over. It is 6322729. My question is that the drive serial # or just bell housing part #? Also the mating surface was rough and had a lot of paint on it which I wouldn't think would seal well shouldn't that surface be clean and paint free?

I sanded the surface lightly until my fingernail could not detect a raised edges. Hope that was ok. I cannot see how it couldn't be.

Thanks,
PF

Playing around with the numbers you posted, Only one serial number came up close to what your saying the engine would be, And that is serial number 0D425236, Model number 457B100CS, Belonging to an 1990 MERCRUISER W/ PS 5.7L ALPHA engine.

Are you sure the (#6) in your 6322729 is not a (F) 0F322729???

Can you see the casting number on the rear of the left side of the engine just above where the bellhousing bolts on???

Yes it is 3970010 which puts it as a 68-79 engine from the GM casting numbers. This falls in line with the Roch model 17059288 being made 1979.

3970010 68 - 79 350 & 327 145-375 2&4-Bolt mains/Truck/Hi Perf

I am trying to get the serial number of the engine which I only can only see 425236 and I'm guessing some front digits are missing.

I also trying to find serial number for drive not that it matters as a new SEI SE106 drive will be here tomorrow. The number on the flange bottom of exhaust port reads 6709229 just wondering if that is the drive serial#.
