Hello Guys, I have a question about the trim sender and trim limit switches. See the title of this topic. I suspect the trim switch is bad but which one? How can I test this? Drive is an Alpha One Gen II on a Mercruiser 3.0.

Is it possible that one of the solenoids is bad? Again, how do I test that?

Thanks in advance for your help.

You can try to clean the connections on the solenoids in the back of the boat....my boat was having an identical issue, down worked fine, up wouldn't, trailer worked fine. I played with the switch a bunch of times and if finally started to work, could of been mostiure from sitting over winter...who knows

Usually this is caused by the trim limit switch. There will be two single wire connectors coming out of the wiring harness close to the trim pump - a blue and white and a purple and white. If you connect the the blue/white and the purple/white together and everything works normally (except for the limit stop) then the limit switch or the attached wiring is bad. The switch is the one on the port side of the gimble ring.

You have two trim solenoids. Down and up. Both the trim and trailer use the up. So: your down is OK, since the trailer works, the up is OK too. Your problem is either the trim switch (not very likely), or trim limit switch on the port side of the gimbal ring or wires (very likely). First run the outdrive ALL THE WAY DOWN and try the trim. If it works you are OK, if not try the following: Look in the stern for two black wires coming through the transom that plug into two connectors, one with a purple white wire and the other with two blue white wires. Unplug the black wires and jumper between the two connectors with a short piece of wire. Try the trim switch. If it works you have isolated your problem to the trim limit circuit. Good luck.

Thanks all. I'll check it out Friday and let you know. I think it's the T.L switch indeed. If so I'll try to unscrew it and look if I can correct it for now. I know it's possible to change the switches without removing the drive but if I do this than probably change the bellows too and make it an one stop job :)

One last question, does anybody know the correct distance between the points of the hydrological ram if the limit switch should kick in?

You may be able to take the switch apart and clean the contacts. Pretty simple switch. Mark it well so you can get back in the same place.

Indeed, both Trim Sender en Limit switch opened and cleaned. Contacts a bit dirty. also adjusted the limit because is was set at 500mm instead of 520mm.

Thanks guys :peace:
