So, just got back my upper housing, bell housing, gimbal ring and gimbal housing back from media blast. My lower housing a a new Mercruiser so painting not needed and my transom plate was in great shape without any corrosion so doesn't need paint either. To paint the blasted parts, I will be using 1) aluma prep, 2) alodine, 3) DP90 epoxy primer, and then 4) PPG finish coat to paint them. I have of course pitting in areas that had some corrosion. What is the best filler to use to smooth the pitted areas before paint? Also, would the filler go directly on the blasted surface followed by the above sequence to paint or should it go on after aluma prep and before alodine, after alodine and before primer, or after primer and before finish coat?

Thanks....

I'd use any of the 2 pack metal fillers, like Loctite, or Selleys 'Knead-it', Permatex, Devcon....

Directly onto bare metal before painting.

Glad to see you are using DP90, i blasted and primed my 65 gto with dp90 in 1993, almost zero bubble back of rust since then. Check the usage instructions, back in the day it required a fresh air supplied respirator. Of course i ignored this and then coughed fir three days

Thanks achris. Was concerned about AlumaPrep or Alodine affecting the filler. I might try to contact the people that make alodine to see if it is better to apply the metal filler before or after alodine.

Scott06, I have used DP90 on cars also. Was trying to decide whether to use DP40 or DP50 which is the same product but in gray so that it is easier to tell the top coat coverage. But then if it gets chipped, the gray would show more readily on the chip. I have some DP90 but I think it is too old to use. Will buy fresh.

By the way, what seems to be the best top coat for the DP90 based upon past experiences, Single Stage or Base/Clear? Acrylic enamel or acrylic urethane? Not sure if I will need a high build primer over the DP90 and before top coat.

Ive just used merc phantom black rattle cans.

Really depends on what you want it to look like. Im sure a ppg concept single stage would be good for durablity but dont get any runs you cant sand it out easily…high build primer only if you are trying to make it shine.

in the old days probably imron …

Rust-oleum Gloss Black, same as Merc Phantom black, but half the price.

Looking for something that will last a long time. The other PPG option is Omni which is a little cheaper. I have tried Base/Clear on cars and had run problems with the Clear. Will Rustoleum work over epoxy primer?
