I am in the process of installing my '94 Alpha 1 Gen II drive back on my boat after swapping a 350 inplace of a 4.3. I have an alignment bar and have aligned the engine to the best of my ability using all of the excellent info here.

The problem is the drive slides on untill there is 1 1/2 inches to go. then will not go any further. Splines are aligned. What could it be bottoming out on?
Is it possible that the engine has the wrong coupler. I was told the boat the engine came from had an Alpha drive. I really dont want to pull this engine again.

Any help is much appreciated

All Gen II drives have the same length shaft.
Did you put some oil on the orings on the splined shaft? You may have to bump the drive a bit to get new orings to go in the gimbal bearing.

Ayuh,....

Give it a good ole Mule Kick, after you've Slathered it up with grease....
That'll usually get it passed the O-rings...

Shifter in forward position? as said and as for the grease if the coupler is/gets globbed with grease it can cause an air pocket with the grease not alowing the air out past the shaft. Thin coat and like Don said oil. I'm not familiar with which coupler you have but if the air can't get released something to check.

Re: Drive Install Help

Thank you for your help. The answer was yes to everything .... Throttle forward, grease etc.

I was afraid to persuade it past the o-rings with out someone telling me that was OK. After a couple of persuasions :D ...

It is now in.

Thank you again
