drive install questions

as part of my first winterization i built a drive stand and pulled my drive to store in my garage. i spent today cleaning, sanding and anti-foul painting it. replaced my anodes too. tomorrow im gonna do my first install. got my gasket and o-rings all set. scored an engine alignment tool from eBay and have read the manual three times. but i have two concerns. i copied this from the manual.
"IMPORTANT: Rubber gasket must be properly positioned and glued in bell housing bore before installing drive unit or water may leak into boat. Ensure that rubber gasket and water passage O-ring are properly positioned in bell housing."
my first concern is what glue to use? bellows adhesive? it didn't seem like the old round rubber gasket was glued in the bellows. it sorta was just sittin in there. ok, my second concern.
"Snap the Shift Slide Stabilizer Tool onto stud directly below shift slide and position as shown."
can the install be accomplished without this tool? or am i running out in the morning to find one? any other pointers?

I have over the years used a variety of different adhesives, from bellows adhesive to silicone gasket sealer. Basically anything that dries flexible that will hold the seal in place is what you're looking for..

can the install be accomplished without this tool? or am i running out in the morning to find one? any other pointers?

I've never heard of a Shift Slide Stabilizer Tool... Just make sure the slider hasn't fallen over before you get it in the cavity in the drive.

i used perfect seal this year. couldn't find my bellows adhesive. worked ok on the big rubber gasket. i used the same on the water transfer oring between the bell housing and the upper. didn't work so well there. kept it in place long enough for me to get the drive on was about it. i watched it stay put by a thread of glue and then go together.

yep to what achris said too on the shift slide. just watch the shift slide go into the cavity in the upper. i lubed that cavity on my 1 drive per instructions from the s/m. watch it go into the cavity and be sure it stays upright, engaged in the shift lever and goes into the cavity smoothly.

I've never heard of a Shift Slide Stabilizer Tool.

i think i have. it's this little do hicky that looks like it snaps onto the slide and is then maybe stabilaized by the studs? can't remember. i've not had any issue installing w/o so far so never really looked into it other than to notice it was somthing available. bet mercstuff has one... just a guess... (edit, must say, i can't find anything on mercstuff about that tool. still think i've seen one somewhere though)

Personally, I glue the big quad oring in with bellows adhesive.
The shift slide stabilizer tool I have seen pictures of. Never seen one or used one. I just put a glob of grease on the roller that sets between the 2 prongs of the slide.
It keeps things in place till the drive is on.

wow, a quiksilver shifty shafty thingy... gotta be the way to go.... knew i'd seen one some where. didn't realize it was an oem thingy. let us know if it works good for ya or gets in your way for sliding it together.

yep, bellows adhesive works real good.. guess i'll have to get me another tube.

Had a look in the manual and saw it.... I do what Don said, glob of grease on the roller holds the slide upright... Job done. I wouldn't mind betting that an average mech would be quicker without the tool than with it...

I used grease on the water passage o-ring and grease on the round rubber gasket thingy that goes around the U-Joints as well as the shift fork.
