Drive is coming off...

1987 OMC 4.3 with Cobra outdrive.

Want to take the drive off to check all seals and bellows. Boat is taking on a LOT of water.

I do tons of work on vehicles, and I'm very mechanically inclined. No affraid to get my hands dirty.

How hard of a job? Anyone have a simple step by step? I have a couple manuals, so I can always check them... I just know that there tends to be "tricks of the trade" that you don't always see in the manuals.

Also, can I pull it without a cherry picker? How much do they weigh? Any chance of being able to do it by hand, or do I need to borrow/rent a picker?

Thanks in advance for all help and advice!!

Howdy,

It's not particularly hard...... You DO need an OEM manual. If you have A Seloc or Clymer manual, those are pretty good for starting your woodstove......Not do good for working on your drive.

Get an OEM manual.

Pulling the drive is fairly easy. 6 nuts on the drive and the thru bolt at the back of the trim cyls.

It'll weigh about 110lbs or so.

Get an OEM Manual.

Oh, and btw, read the following http://www.hastings.org/~stuart/cobra/

for sure get the cherry picker and when you put drive back on make sure the pivot housing studs are even with the holes on the outdrive. I put a piece of wood beteew the gimbal and pivot housing to even them up.

They aren't as heavy as you might think. I can do my Volvo Duo prop by myself but I do have it lined up and setup so there is only 1/4" between the drive and the ground.

the neighbour has this down to a science, due to unforeseen difficulties.
first, two people, second, ensure boat is backed over a ditch or at least top of leg at eye level, third modify pallet to hold leg (skeg goes into built up slit and the prop still turns) and use tie downs to support sideway movement
it works for him?
