Drive Lube Monitor Overflowing

Hi all,

My family just acquired a new to us 98' Sea Ray 210 bowrider. It has a 5.7L EFI and alpha gen 2. Almost as soon as I got it home, I pulled the drive off and replaced the impeller. Previous Owner, who was the original owner, couldn't tell me if it had ever been replaced or when. Got it all apart and found that the impeller was actually in pretty good shape, but replaced it anyway.

Long story short, after replacing the gear lube and draining and refilling the drive and remote bottle with new gear oil the remote bottle is overflowing after the boats been run in the water for an hour or so this is the first boat we've owned with the remote drive lube thing...

The first time it did it, I attributed it to air in the system that was burping, but we ran it again today and it spewed some more out of the hole in the top of the cap. Once it cools off its now at the add line on the remote bottle. It sat a week between runs too.

I followed the procedure outlined everywhere, filled from the bottom until it came out the vent, closed the vent off and pumped a little more until it came in to the reservoir, then topped the off the bottle to a little below the full line.

The first time it spewed I probably have 4-8 oz in the bilge, this next time was much less probably only 2 if that.

Am I still working air out? should I be checking the bottle while its hot instead of cold?

What all have you seen?

Thanks,

Jeremy,

Hi there, as a very quick check, remove the drives bottom oil drain plug, see if water or oil comes out first. If water then you'll need to pressure test the drive and maybe reseal the stern drive unit. If oil comes out, check for the black seal under the gear lube reservoir cap...Also inspect the orange one-way valve on top of the reservoir cap the best you can... Most times buying and installing a new cap solves the oil over flow problem. If it don't resolve the problem than you may have a heat and/or bearing issue inside the drive.

Hope it's the cap, good luck.:)
