drive oil reservoir

I did a service on my alpha gen 2 and along the way decided to clean the remote oil reservoir that sits on top of the motor. I also blew out the hose that leads from the reservoir to the transom fitting. Just to be sure there was no restriction. Didn't there used to be a dipstick of sorts on top of the drive used for checking oil level?
That to me seems a much better way of checking level. Was that on a gen 1 ?

I think the Volvos have/had them, but with the reservoir, you wouldn't need a dipstick as long as the bottle and hose were working properly. the outdrive will always be full

A dipstick was used one the very first of the gen IIs. It was discontinued fairly quickly and the engine mounted bottle is the norm now.

I've been watching some of your you tube videos Chris and see you suggest filling the upper cavity on the drive shaft housing by laying the unit on it's side. So the entire area above the vent plug should be full of oil? That's the way I'll do it. Also, I've got two different brands of drive gear oil. Both 90 weight but the Quicksilver is blueish in color and the Mercury is gold. Any issue with mixing those 2?

The 'blue' is High performance lube and the 'gold' is standard. Only use the blue, and don't mix them.
