drive shaft end play

I removed my water pump assembly on my blackmax 200 hp and observed that drive shaft have lateral movement.(may be .050 to.060").I removed shim under timken cup to reduce end play(bearing under water pump).Now,lateral movement is minimal and total endplay is approx..002 to.004".Is it correct ?Someone can tell me what is the recommended endplay .i don't yet received my mercury service manual and summer is so short here in Quebec!!!!!

whatever you took out put back just like you found it ,no endplay adjustment here i know of ,if drive shaft slides in a spline whick i am sure it does
may b just a slid washer not a adjustment shim

Seems if you change 0.060 to .004 something will BREAK !!

By lateral movement I think you are talking about the driveshaft,not the propshaft.? ?

Now if you change .004 to .060 you'll know.it.

Just reread your post .........

put the shims back in.
