Pulled my drive for impeller corder to Lheck also. Thnx for help everyone so far. As per achris advice ordered lower oil seal. When I installed it I drove it all the way in with the grooved side in until it mated with circular structure about 1-1.5 cm below surface. Wrong thing to do! Gonna order another seal and not use the one I drove in too far. Couple questions please: 1)cant tell from Seloc manual which side of seal goes in first--side with groove or flat side. Thought Youtube video of seal change showed grooved end in first. 2)what is coiled wire o-ring in the grooved area of seal for? Doesn't seem to stay in place. Old one was broken and up insidethe assembly. Whats easiest way to degrease area for insertion of seal with Loctite? Which Loctite to use? Thnx again.

The ss spring inside the seal is to give it a little more grab on the shaft. If it doesn't stay in, the seal is US... It's not an 'O' ring, and the seal is not in a carrier, the seal is the seal...

Thanks Chris. I just didn't know how else to describe the ss spring. What does "US" in regards to the spring coming out? On that seal I pushed all the way in the spring was really deformed by being pushed in so up to that inner ring. Is a little alcohol or lacquer thinner ok to degrease ahead of Loctite. Is this Loctite available anywhere or is it specific to marine app. Also, is that manual OK for a '78 MC-1? I forgot to give you the year and model of my outdrive. Some of the illustrations looked like my unit with the "grab hole" on top of the upper case. Again, many thanks to all, Greg

Hi Greg,

As this is not your thread, and I'm not sure how relevant your problems are to the OPs, I am going to split off some of your posts (and my replies) into a new thread...

US = UnServiceable...

Cleaning the edge of the seal and the inside lip of the housing can't hurt...

Procedure is the same for your drive as the manual I posted. (Another reason to have your own thread and include models and/or serial numbers)...

And Loctite should be available anywhere, it's not marine specific...

It must take the patience of Job to deal with inarticulate newbies with minimal concept of forum etiquette. The first time I have to let one of the newer anesthesia trainees take the epidural needle and advance it by feel alone, far enough, but not too far (spinal cord just a mm away) I keep the Prayer of Patience in mind. I think my job is easier. I hope when I get this seal in I'll be able to get it remounted and finally in the water. GK
