Drive Shaft Oil Seal 1977 70 hp

Resealing the lower unit on 1977 70 hp evinrude outboard. I’ve seen a video of a guy punching the drive shaft oil seal out, but mine is tearing. It is all one piece right?

Yes, they take a beating in there so stick to side walls etc although ive never done that one myself. Just be so careful to not hit the bearing. Put a bit of grease on the lip before reinstalling shaft

Typically you would pack the space between the 2 seals with grease.----I put electrical tape on splines to prevent damage to seals when sliding this assembly in place.----Note --the word " front " on the housing too.

I said there were 2 seals.------In 77 it left the factory with 2 seals.-----What is in there now I can not tell.

Interesting. We’re you an evinrude engineer? It looks like one seal that spans about a half inch. Must be after market.

I think yours has 2 seals in it !!----I started working on outboards before your motor was built !-----That bearing is not very shiny.----What does the thrust bearing look like.----What does the driveshaft bearing surface look like at the top ???----Pictures needed here.
