Hey boating world,
I have a 65 HP 1977 659HA made by Chrysler, and I have a need for a new drive shaft. These outboards have a one-piece lower unit and mine is a long shaft. I am wondering if anyone out there can tell me the part number of this drive shaft, and were they cross-compatible with any other models?

I searched the parts diagrams, but they only cover models 659HB and 658B8B, not mine which is a 659HA. I could spend the $20 on a parts catalog for it, but I thought maybe someone out there might have one already and be able to tell me. I already bought a new (old stock) forward gear for this lower unit, and it was the same one in the diagram for the other 65 HP Chryslers. Does this mean the drive shaft part number in this diagram is the same also?

The diagram for the other 65's listed part FS577128, and includes bearing, shims and crush ring. If the part number I just mentioned is the right one, it means that several model years of 55 HP Chryslers used this same drive shaft. That would, in turn, mean I could get a used one for $41 on ebay instead of the new price of $360. Please help me save $300 if that is possible...

These are photos of the one shaft I have. it has no bearing. It also has no splines on the pinion end which you mentioned yours did.

All these shafts that I have seen have not been splined to the pinion but that does not mean that there were not model changes--just that i have not seen them. Similarly, I have never seen a short shaft engine. To the best of my knowledge, all these drive shafts will swap into any one piece lower unit.

Overall length of this long shaft is 30 inches from top of splines to pinion threads, not including the threads. Not anywhere near the 28 1/2 inches from water pump to splines that you mentioned BUT: Hope this helps you find what you need. This engine is an '82 or '84. Earlier engines used a lower unit similar to the single carb 55 and the shroud went almost all the way down to the ventilation plate. These did appear to be longer
