Drive shaft play

1997 90hp Johnson m# 90JTSLEUA
Changing water pump and noticed side to side play in drive shaft( not end play)
What is acceptable? Nothing in my factory manual about this.

I don't think I have ever seen any specs on side play for the drive shaft, sorry I can't help you out.
I am sure someone with experience on your engine will come along and help you out.

This is a 2 piece driveshaft and sideplay is normal for them, so much if you lay unit on its side without waterpump housing it will press side of seal and leak oil out.

It's normal as it's a two piece drive shaft. The play comes out when you have the lower unit reinstalled and the drive shaft is in the crankshaft.
