Will the gear housing drive shaft pull straight out after removing the water pump assy? Thanks.

Hi there, In order to pull the drive shaft, you will have to pull the prop shaft in order to gain access to the drive shaft gear/pinion gear for removal.

You need to remove the shaft nut... item number 18 and gear 17, http://www.mercruiserparts.com/Show...bnbr=70&bdesc=GEAR+HOUSING+ASSEMBLY,+COMPLETE

Hopefully you have a stern drive service manual handy as depending on how far you go into the project, this is/can be a big job especially when it comes to specification tolerances on reassembly.

Here's your parts catalog for the drive in your signature line for you, http://www.mercruiserparts.com/selec...?doc_nbr=56999

Good luck to you.:)

Thanks for the replies. I was afraid it was going to be difficult, I guess I'll take it to the shop and have it done. I have two lower drives, one the fwd/rev gears are stripped out, the other the drive shaft is twisted off (the prop shaft still turns freely both directions and doesn't sound bad). Hopefully I can get one good lower drive out of these two. Thanks again.
