I have a 1979 15hp Johnson. I was changing out the waterpump. As I was removing the impeller, I noticed the drive shaft coming up with it. Is this suppose to do this and can I remove the drive shaft this way without a lot of problem reinstalling it. Looking at parts breakdown looks like a chance of a spring and ball beaing dropping down in to propshaft housing.. The reason I ask this is the seal below the driveshaft is in bad shape and needs to be changed. The spring on seal is broken. Will I need special tools to do this?

on all the ones ive done the driveshaft comes out leaving those bottom pinion in the LU
no special tool required, i just use a small screwdriver with some cloth on it to not damaged the lining of the wall. Do both seals and check which way they go, either lip up or lip down
I cover the outside of the seal, the metal bit in a touch of permatex aviation form a gasket

Thanks I appreciate that. I thought I screwed up. I have one more question perhaps you can answer. I usually have a service manual before I do this kind of stuff. I am just doing a tuneup and changing the seals on this old motor that was given to me. I pulled out the the bearing carrier in the propshaft housing I did that before I saw the video with that special puller they use. It came out quite easy. I removed the two bolts on back tapped the end around 90 degrees then tapped it out. I changed the seals then put it back in. Everything seems ok, I just haven't cranked it up yet. Is there isn't anything that could have fallen in ? Once again I am worried about that spring and tiny ball bearing.

ferdly1 - What did you find with the removal of the bearing carrier? I'm in the same position and I'm wondering if it's ok to just reassemble without any special consideration.
