drive shaft slips out of power head

have a 8hp johnson-model #j8rccs ( I think 1988 )<br />the drive shaft slips too far into the pinion gear & becomes disconnected from the power head.<br />is there a part i'm missing or something. :confused:

Al,Not intending to come across smart alec ,I would say that the primary part missing would be a service manual if you don't already have one.Many times the driveshaft to pinion gear requires proper shimming for vertical location of the driveshaft and gear clearances.A manual specific to your engine should be helpful.

Your comment does not make sense! There is a shoulder at the lower end of the DS that "locates" it in relation to the pinion gear. Unless the shoulder is gone/worn down OR you have a new/different DS (that is incorrect), OR a worn pinion gear, it can't really "drop down" and fall out of the crankshaft! Are the splines of the crank or DS worn and slipping?? What has happened to make you "suspect" a problem???
