Drive will not go into gear

While de-accelerating all of the sudden the drive went into neutral. Will not go into forward or reverse, just revs up. I turned engine off and am able to just propeller to lock while control is in forward position (as well as the opposite way it locks while in reverse). I Opened up the drive a little and it appeared that cable is still working properly as the little arm moved inside the drive and was rotating the other arm.

Any ideas what could be causing this?

Spun coupler, broken lower drive shaft, stripped upper drive shaft splines, spun prop hub, stripped gears in the top box.......

Time to pull the drive and look at everything. Bet that in 20 minutes you know what is wrong.

did you smell burning rubber, if so, coupler. look for little balls of rubber in the bilge. your going to be pulling the drive and removing the motor to replace the coupling
take a sharpie and mark the prop nut with respect to the prop. put boat in water on trailer, put in gear. if the lines moved, prop hub - if so, you are back on the water with a new prop
drain a bit of oil from the drive, if you see glitter, you took out gears (can also see that by removing the top cover) - if
pull drive, if u-joints gone, you will know immediately.

I looked in engine bay and it appeared that drive shaft was spinning. However, boat no go. Prop is still there and locks when trying to spin it in forward and locks in opposite direction when I put it into Reverse.

If it was spun prop hub would the prop still lock when spinning it in forward gear?

It might. Depending on how bad whatever it is that got buggered, the drive/prop/coupler/whatever will only slip under load.

took prop off, sucked up fishing line and turned thrust washer into a bearing.

That's not the problem. The thrust washer is at the front of the prop, and just stops it crashing into the bearing housing. The drive between the propshaft and the prop is by the big splines, not the washer. Keep looking...

The fishing line may have been on there a while. The fishing line can take out the seal in the drive, have you looked at the oil level in the drive lube reservoir on the engine, has it dropped? Maybe let some out the drain on the drive and look at it, hopefully no water intrusion.
