Drive won't stay down in reverse

Thinking about buying a 1988 Sea Ray with a Merc 260 and Alpha outdrive. Looked at the boat today and it looks nice. Owner brought the wrong key so we couldn't run it. He says the outdrive tries to come up when you put the boat in reverse. Going to look at the manuals now, just wondering if anybody had any idea offhand what the problem could be. Seems like I vaguely remember something about a check valve in the trim system.
