driveshaft gimbal bearing question

We want to reuse an SX driveshaft gimbal bearing ...alu style with grease hole ...came off a crashed SX leg with about 1000 hrs . No idea on how often it was greased but bearing looks brand new and spins smooth. Only thing is I notice in the manual that it says ...... "should pivot in all directions" .... well it does but only with lots of force ...you cannot make the inner race pivot just by pushing it with your thumbs. ...... hate to throw away a perfectly good bearing .

Maybe there is a service life on these things as in so many hrs ???

Can't find anything on line or in the VP manual so any help on this would be appreciated ...thanks.

With all that you've done already, why would you want to do that? Put in a new one...JMO

Re: driveshaft gimbal bearing question

If the bearing was pulled from the housing by using a slide hammer on the inner race....the races have dents in them.
Never reuse a bearing that has been pulled by transferring stress across the races.

Hey erieron ............ ya its pretty tough over here .....:D

http://images.google.com/imgres?img...=IBMA,IBMA:2008-02,IBMA:en&sa=N&start=20&um=1

but you got a big advantage ....you are probably a U.S. citizen so you can move and work here ....me as a canadian ...well i can't, ....so I can't charge all the locals helping them with their boat problems ..but i do get lots of mahi mahi for dinner... this is also good cause ingratiating oneself with the locals is important .... there once was a guy here called Capt. Cook who didn't so they had him for dinner ! :D

look up that bearing number in sierra, then do a cross reference on any other manufacturer that used that link belt part number in their transom shields.

Well Eron ....if the question is what am i doing here as in why am i here well
there is something mystical and magical about Hawaii. You can feel
it in the aloha spirit of its people and the ethereal beauty of the
land. Hawaiians do the Hula. Its graceful fabled movements tell us
stories of a culture that reaches back through the centuries to the
very edge of time. You can feel it in the stark volcanic violence of
Mauna Loa and in the shear majestic grandeur of Kauai's Na Pali
Coast. You can feel it in the lush green waterfall draped valleys
where it is said the spirits of the ancients live. And at night, on
the outer island beaches below a million stars through the winds of
time, you will also know it's there. If you listen very carefully
amid the sound of breaking surf, you will hear the whispered voices
of the ancient Polynesian mariners who came here long ago. With only
faith that these lands existed beneath the eastern star they sailed
over thousands of miles of open ocean to make this island paradise
their home. Remarkable as these epic voyages are, is the land to
which they came. Yes, there really is, no other place on earth quite
like Hawaii ......and unlike the other islands Kauai has not changed much in 20 years .... but beware ...if you come here you may never leave....:D

I see...so, you're there writing greeting cards...:D Sorry...

Sounds like a great place, and one you have found a connection with. I've never been there, but it's on my list. I was just curious if you were living there, or vacationing, or working....

Ah Ha .....your right ........I work for Hallmark ....no just kidding .....but I do have a special BOAT connection with Hawaii .......I am from a little town in England ...same town as Captain Cook and one of my ancestors was aboard HMS Resolution when it anchored off Kauai in 1778.

I am an old retired developer ( always been a boat and car nut ) lucky enough to come to Kauai now every year to escape Vancouver B.C.?s horrible winters.

So I help the locals with their boat problems and thanks to iboats and Don and the crew I get most of it right .....I?ve being doing this for a few years now and nobodies threatened to have ME for dinner yet .....

Don?s probably going to think if I don?t stop it with the ?Perfect Seal? they probably will :D

Re: driveshaft gimbal bearing question

They all take force to pivot. The pivoting is just for alignment. Once aligned they don't move.

Re: driveshaft gimbal bearing question

interesting cr2k .... could you elucidate ..... is this because in some applications the engine might be up angled slightly from the horizontal line of the entire drive shaft such that the DC universal is always operating at an angle ? Once had to get a custom double cardin from CA to make things work in a blazer with a 10 inch suspension lift ...

Thanks

they pivot because the transom is not perpendicular to the plane of the drive shaft coming from the engine.
