I have finally got to the point of reassembling this basket case. All the repairs have been made, but in the Maint and Repair manual shows a cradle type of template to measure from the top of the driveshaft shim pack to the top of the pinion bearing. Since this is where some of the major damage occurred I want to get it right. Where can I buy such a template, I'm sure it's specfic to only a few years and horsepowers.

Or does someone have the very exact dimension.
Thanks for all your help.

Thats a special tool that the dealer will probably be reluctant to sell. You can ask, thats up to the dealer but it may be just as well to pay him to measure it and sell you the shims.

Besides, then you wont have a special tool sitting around that you may never use again.

Thanks for the advice. No dealer would have attempted this repair. It has been a total rebuild.
Why is the dimension such secret. If the dimension was given then any manner of tool could be used for to obtain the clearance? Does it key off of the case somehow. It didn't look like it in the book, but it should based on the casting dimension differences.
Thanks again
Steve

I couldnt agree with you more! The d/s is measured outside the case which makes no sense to me, never has.

The measurement isnt a big secret but the tool may be expensive depending on which one it is. Its a fairly critical measurement that comes down to thousandths of an inch. Its not like the shift rod thats +/- 1/32". The manual you have probably has the dimension anyway. You just need the tool.

The book I have doesn't show any dimensions. It shows the tool and has the tolerance, but no overall dimension. If any one knows what it should be for this motor I'd like to know, cause I can fabricate a bridge to take the measurement.
Thanks
