I've got my lower unit disassembled to the point of removing the driveshaft. I see there yet another special tool # 0311875 socket to turn the driveshaft in order to loosen the pinion nut. A few questions..... Does anyone loosened this nut without that tool? I see one guy that swears he has used a pipe wrench on the shaft 100 times and it works great.. Also, I see part #'s 0914699 and Solas WR007H that LOOK the same but we know how that goes... Just wondered if anyone KNOWS they are the same tool.. Any other methods of removing the driveshaft??

Thanks in advance!!!

So, who has removed their driveshaft, and how did you do it?

Removal is easy with a vicegrip and some shim stock to protect the spline.---------But the special socket ( I have one ) allows you to torque the nut.-----Very important .

WHat kind of shim stock do you use? I may try to tap a 3/4" pvc coupling onto the splines then use vicegrips.. Good info on torquing though... May have to spring for the socket..

OK.... but you said it's easy with vicegrips and shim stock... what kind of shim stock?? Also, are all Johnson/Evinrude shafts the same size and number of splines? I;m pretty sure #0311875 is what I need, but I;d hate to order it and find out it's wrong [h=1][/h]

????-----Apparently Eskimos use snow to build houses as they have lots of it.-----Look around to see if you have beverage cans or soup cans that you could use for protecting the spline.-----Johnson and Evinrude come off the same assembly line so they use the same spline.----Do not forget to make sure the gears are properly shimmed if you are replacing a shaft !!!

...without being able to put a torque wrench on the shaft, how would you know you got the torque right? Getting it off is less than half the battle...

You have to pull the driveshaft out....

Of course you have to pull the driveshaft out... the pinion was not coming out... just needed a "hair" more... it was kind of ****-eyed between the driveshaft hole and the prop shaft.... finally was able to push the prop shaft far enough the opposite way and got the pinion out... Not knowing EXACTLY what's on the other side of things makes me hesitant to apply too much pressure, beat it too hard, etc... Schematic...yes, I saw that "Special Tool" as well... but trying to avoid outrageously priced "Special Tools" ... I think I;d be a Special Tool if I bought every one that's recommended in the FSM... lol Sutor623.... Hopefully racerone can take a joke... Half his posts start w ?????? can you say "Email Etiquette"?? Racerone???? I LOVE YOU BUDDY AND THANKS FOR YOUR HELP!!
