'63 75hp Evinrude

My driveshaft and propshaft are a bit scored where the seals touch them (driveshaft a little more so than the propshaft). I assume it is from dirt or salt collecting on them over time. The depth of the grooves is around 1/64" or less, and I can feel the new seals catch on them when they slide past.

Is this normal on older motors?

Will it be a problem/should I go to the expense of having the grooves welded up and the shafts turned back down on a lathe?

Thanks,
Rick

Re: Driveshaft Scored

When installing new seals, either drive the new seals in beyond the groove or leave them short of the groove ... no need to fill the grooves unless they are really wide.

Prop shaft grooving is usually caused by mono wrapped around the shaft; drive shaft from crud on the shaft getting to the seal area.
