Driveshaft will pull out

I have a 1994 Johnson Fast strike 150hp V6 outboard and I am trying to do some work on my lower unit. Disassembling everything has been somewhat smooth so far, but I am stuck on removing the driveshaft from the pinion gear. I removed the locknut, and all the videos I’ve seen say you should be able to just pull up while shaking the driveshaft around and it should separate from the pinion gear. My manual says the pinion gear is a taper fit and it can be difficult to pull out. Has anybody ran into this problem before?

Steps to take.----Put nut back on driveshaft to protect threads.-----Insert some kind of wedge between nut and clutch dog.-----Give propshaft a bump with rubber mallet / piece of wood.

Success! I was able to fit a file in between the clutch dog and drive shaft and after a few taps on the prop shaft she popper right out. Thank you so much for your help.
