driveshaft ??

Hi , I was just removing my lower leg, and when the driveshaft came down there was a torn O ring around the top of the drive shaft like it would be in that little groove up there , Ive never seen an o ring there before and didnt see one on any BRP litterature i have?? Iv e havent seen this on my other 2 Evinrudes???? Anyway is it suppose to be there or not?? Thanks!!!

Sorry its a 1970 25 hp

Yes,It helps hold the grease on the splines as far as i know.My 175 had the o-ring on it also.

It will only take one time of not changing the o ring and having your driveshaft seize up, fighting it all afternoon to get it down, and you will never leave it out again.

thanks well i guess ill put a new one on,, thats funny though my other 2 motors didnt have those o rings on, i never had any problems relating to that ,, well better safe than sorry!!
