My daughter just got her temperary learners permit, man talk about unsafe towing practices, this girl behind the wheel is by far the most unsafe public road act I've ever taken part in, I about had a had a stroke, we're putting her through driving school as soon as we can afford it, on top of our insurance going up 65 bux a month too, only 3 more years and She'll fly the coop, I guess I should be enjoying this.

my "little" girl will be 16 in Nov. She is just about done with her required driving hours to get her license. He mother can't drive with her, it ends up with the two of them in a gienormous screaming match............lol

I sit in the passenger seat trying to keep from stomping the brake pedal that isn't there. I do remain calm tho. I explain and try not to yell. I have only kicked her out of the drivers seat once, that was because she came so close to cars parked along the street I could have touched them through the window.

Give her time and patience, she will get it.

Took my son to the DMV to get his permit yesterday. He wants to drive the BMW. HA! He'll be lucky to drive the Suburban on country roads for a while.

She'll be learning on my Jeep ZJ to navigate the local cemetary roads, then maybe we'll try some street driving again, but it was a big mistake thinking She could jump right into it initially.

i love growing up in the country, was driving by 10 and driving semis by 15 down the highway. my niece and nephew are both good drivers do to the fact that my sis and bro in law took them out to the desert and let them drive when they turned 12. by the time they got the liscense they were both great drivers and no one in the family have problems letting them drive in big cities when they were 16. city kids are at a dissadvantage when learning this most common task.

Not trying to put you on the spot but I do have a couple of questions,, One is WHY DOES SHE NEED TO DRIVE? and another one is DOES SHE HAVE A CELL PHONE? If so you better MAKE 100% sure she never takes it with her when she trys to drive....If not you most likely will soon be paying much more than 80 bucks a month extra......................funerals average about 7k

It's not that She needs to drive, it's just an important step of growing up, I feel. Granted I know some people who have never had a drivers licence, they ride a bus, ride a bike, or walk.
I feel it's my responsibilty as a parent. And yes she has a cell phone and exibits more responsibilty than some adults I know.

driving school is cheap, considering the alternatives. $65 for insurance, is dirt cheap.

Boy thats the truth, $480.00 locally, that's for 24hrs of academic school and 8 hrs. of actual driving meneuvers, driving schedule is twice a week with make up times available. i haven't done much shopping around because this school is only 3 miles away and some of her friends are going too, wife said we all get a group rate if it works out.

a70, Do me a favor please. Have her read about what just happened near my home in my post on Teens, alcohol, and driving.

I know you will do your best at keeping her safe, but we all know when you have wheels, mom and pop don't always know what you maybe up to.

Re: Driving permit at age 15-1/2

Kids driving before they are 'ready" is a pet concern I have. Many young folks dont really have the ability to learn how to drive IN A SAFE MANNER at 15 or 16 or 17 or 18 or even up to the age of 21. Problem is everyone thinks they have a right to drive just because they want to and can afford a car. We need to screen the ones who are slow out and make them wait. But no way because they think its their right as soon as they reach a magical age and until they prove they are not ready they get a free shot at killing themselves and others... If the parent permits them to have a cell phone while driving the parent can be sued because they are responsible when the kid wrecks....Go to any high school and watch the kids leave who drive to school and see how many are already on the friggin phone before they even pull out of the parking lot, any high school. This alone proves that most kids are not ready to drive at age 16. Any kid that needs "special driving school" who is only 16 or 17 perhaps should wait until their natural abilities develop and then learning to drive will be much easier.

We never had children and I don't know if you've seen it, but that Sooobarooo commercial, where dad is giving advise before his 'little girl' drives off on her own, sure sets an image in my mind what it must be like. Here's wishing you all strength & safety!

Um nope. Lindsey knew EXACTLY which one was the gas!!

When she bounced her head off the back window of my truck she figured out how hard to push the gas pedal. She grew up driving go karts and mini bikes and quads. I took her out on gravel roads for hours before I let her hit pavement.

"What's the R mean again dad?" Reminds me of and old joke about an even older farmer that was teaching his wife how to drive. As they neared the end of their gravel road he was looking out his window at his neighbors field. All of a sudden the truck comes to a screeching halt and he is thrown against the dash and windshield.
"Whe the heck happened?" he asks
"I dunno" she replies, "as I was taking off from the stop sign, all I did was shift from D for dirt to P for pavement."

Save yourself some frustration and try this, every time you get into the car have her go over what everthing does, out loud, to you. Every one she gets wrong is 10 min less she gets to drive. It worked for me on all three of my boys and my daughter. They all got it by the fourth time.

Of course back then farm kids were allowed to drive on the gravel roads when you were tall enough to reach the peddals. Power the International pickup through the big curve on the gravel road and bring the back end around sideways was something I was doing by age 12. Hey, I just realised I invented drifting!

Wasn't technically a farm kid, grandfather had a farm that I helped on fairly often. I was driving an international before I could reach the pedals. He would get it moving in low gear and hop out, with the instructions to head towards home and turn off the key when I got there!

different times! (and I'm not that old either!)

Re: Driving permit at age 15-1/2

There was DPS advertising campaign back in the early 70's when I got my license and I remember it well. It all had to do with "Watching Out For The Other Guy". Please make sure she watches and is aware of what the other guy is doing and be prepared to avoid bad situations if she can.

My boy got his learners permit at 14 and license at 15 1/2. He's 22 now and had not had any type accident other than hitting a deer until this spring when another young man ran a red light at 1 in the morning and damn near killed both of them. Please just tell her to watch out for the other guy.

Ya dont want this . . . . .

What is it with kids and driving? I got my learners permit at 15 and did fine. By 16 I had my full license and I never got in a wreck. By 19 years and 3 months I was a full private pilot. One guy I talked to said kids are all about video games and text messages these days, long gone are the days where kids drove go-carts and tractors around the farm where driving a car would be a natural and uneventful step up when the time came. My dad bought me a go cart when I was 8 and I loved that thing. I never had a problem learning to drive and scored a 98% in driving school, with the guy saying that he never gives 100% because no one is a perfect driver.

It's like kids have lost their mechanical ability. They can't figure out how to manipulate their environment or anything. I don't know, hard to explain. It makes sense though.
