Down the carb, as into the intake?

Try a piece of tube on the shop vac, fuel line, bilge pump hose,,, and go fishing. You'll probably want to put a piece of cloth of the hose/vac connection, to catch the screw.

Just hope it didn't wander down into an open valve  that'll be harder to get out

I lost a Lotus 907E motor when it sucked up an air cleaner nut. $5600 later it ran again. Took out 12 valves when the cam sprokets jumped, 3 pistons, and tweaked two rods. FIND THE SCREW! Even if you have to pull an intake manifold that's a bunch easier than a blown motor!

Re: dropped a screw down the carb

Go to your local auto store or hardware store and get a flexable magnet. If you can't find it with that some place that rents tool may have a scope that you can look down inside the carb/intake....if it's in the combustion chamber you can remove sparkplug and look in with the scope to find the screw....Try to get a magnet that's small enough to fit in a sparkplug hole. Good luck let us know how you make out!

i am guessing it made it past carb, pull carb try magnet then if not, vacuum with smaller and smaller hose.if you have to pull spark plugs and magnet or small hose on vacuum.the engine is not startable until screw is found,so if you cant find dont waste to much time start taking it apart.good hunting

if you never touched the throttle plates then they should be closed, and the screw should have not fallen past them. If anything, remove the carb and tip it upside down. Just don't open the throttle plates.

Most Mercruiser linkage fasteners are SS. A magnet will not get them.

Ahhh very true... I didn't think of that. I guess he would have to use one of those grabber fingers to grab it.

Re: dropped a screw down the carb

Unless you are VERY good with the pinching action of the grabbers, I might be more inclined to "grab" a 1" piece of looped over very stick tape/silly putty/something reduculously adhesive (that wont leave bits behind) to nudge up against the bolt and hold it when you hunt in the intake. The grabbers can be great if you get a good grab, but if not, you risk pushing it further and you could be pulling an intake if it falls futher thru the riser. Maybe check another 'similar' bolt on the carb to see if it's SS or not first. If not SS best hunt tool = magnet, otherwise, pincher style. Good luck

Man just pull the carb LOOK! then the mani LOOK! and hopefully it won't have to go any further than that if you didn't move the linkage it should be really close to the carb ports! Like mentioned earlier do not turn it over period!!!! Good luck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: dropped a screw down the carb

Ya know, I've dropped a screw/nut down the carb before... Took all of 30 seconds to remove it because the carb butterflies were closed and it couldn't go any further. I did wire the carb closed as soon as it happened, so I wouldn't accidentally bump it open and have the screw fall into the manifold.

I don't suppose you were that lucky?
