Hey guys, I'm about to tear my hair out. The shift rod connection in the pan behind the bottom carb appears to have a cotter or clevis pin through it, not a screw or bolt as has been suggested in the manual and here. I took a long screwdriver and attempted to tap the pin out, but it only went about a quarter inch. Any ideas before I take it to a mechanic? Thanks!

Try disconnecting the shift arm that leads to the shift rod. This should allow you to manipulate the linkage of the quickconnect block on shift rod to disengage.

If you have clymer manual ISBN 0-89287-555-0, look at page 379, photo 7B. After you remove the hitch pin in the shift lever, push inward on the shift lever shaft, and the shift shaft bellcrank should disengage. When you push in on the shift lever shaft one side of the bellcrank moves away from the pin holding the shift rod, wiggle the shift rod and it will move off of the pin.

Thanks a million gentlemen. I'll give it a try. The problem is that I have been using the clymer manual that covers 73'- 84' motors! Any tricks to getting the rod back in the bellcrank when reassembling?

Once you get it apart you'll be able to see how it makes up.When re installing lower unit just do the reverse procedure and have the connector swung clear until lower unit is flush and a couple of bolts are made up.

Clanton, I tried doing what you said and I could still not get the rod to move. What kinds of tools do you guys use? I've been using long flat head screwdrivers and needle-nose pliers to try and wiggle the rod. This is the most frustrating damn thing I have EVER seen! What a stupid design. I am just about ready to throw in the towel and haul the whole rig in to the dealer. I thought Johnnyrudes were supposed to be easy to work on!

Mercboy, did you disconnect the shift arm from the plastic clevis by removing its cotter pin and clevis pin?Once removed it will allow you to slide the shift arm separating the bell crank.

Locate the end of the shift cable, the cable is connected to a lever, which is welded to a shaft, which goes under the carbs. About 1 inch from the lever on the shaft is a hitch pin(not a cotter pin) you have to remove this pin. I use 12 inch needle nose pliers. You could cut a steel coat hanger, make a small hook on the end and snatch the pin out. Then you have to push the lever/shaft to port side about 3/4 inch. I use a 12 inch screwdriver with the tip against the end of the shaft that come thru the shift lever, and pop it with my hand, it helps to remove the shift cable. I can tell you a good story of the first one I did, with shop chief, and OMC master tech, we worked on this thing about 6 hours, with factory manual.

mercboy, Clanton is correct. You'll need to remove the snap-on hitch pin next to the shift arm bushing to allow you to move the shift arm in to separate bell crank. The cotter pin and pivot pin I was refering to attaches the shift arm to its linkage clevis.Removing it allows you to swing the bell crank aside once separated from the shift rod.

Mercboy , glad to hear you got it.They are almost impossible to describe until you've got it apart and can see it.Hopefully reassembly will be easier. Then you can change your screen name to Johnboy. ;)
