(from a de-railed post)

I replaced my bulb. It is mounted in the usual place right in front of the engine.
But, each week when I go out, the fuel line is empty, and pumping the bulb sometimes fills the line, sometimes only after I have cranked the engine to create a vacuum.
I don't like this because the VRO pumps too much oil at first, dirting up my plugs.
I have a 65 gallon tank under the floor, so the fuel has to be sucked thru 5' of hose.
There is a inspection port hole cover, so I could mount the bulb right at the tank.
But, I was thinking of mounting a petcock (on-off valve) right at the tank, and elliminating the bulb all together.
As long as I remember to shut off the valve when taking the boat out of the water, it should work.
This way, there would never be any air in the line to bleed out.

What do you guys think?

You will have to keep the primer bulb. Those float type carbs are not going to stay full when trailoring. A primer bulb seems to prime faster if it is held in a vertical plane when priming.

Augi, the fuel drains back because of a leaking check valve in the squeeze bulb. Even new ones will do it. For a long fuel line, I have installed an electric fuel pump close to the motor on some boats. Use a spring loaded switch that you have to hold on to keep the pump running. This expedites the start up on the motor on cold mornings {20 to 30 degrees} when the bulb will not compress. Before Every one screams about the danger of such a system, you have to check your systems more often and be alert to problems. nevjb

Augi, check your local Johnny/Rude dealer. Bomby has fuel primer pumps for your application. Should help.

(Spring Loaded Anti Siphon Valves)
Although I really don't care for them, there are situations where they are necessary, such as yours.

Install this component directly at your fuel tank pickup.... where your flexible fuel hose normally ataches to, then attach the fuel hose to the valve.

This will allow the fuel to flow in one direction only... to the engine. Should a fuel restriction exist in the future whereas the anti siphon valve may be sticking, simply replace it.

Re: Dry bulb syndrome 200 Ocean Runner

I had a spring loaded valve on my last boat that caused me problems. That is why I wanted to avoid this.
I just replaced the original bulb with a new OMC bulb. The new bulb seems thinner, easier to squeeze.
I wonder if I took the old bulb, mount it inside the hull in a vertical position, if it would keep the fuel from flowing back to the tank?
Or, mount the new one in that position.

The bulb right now is slightly pointing downwards (the wrong way), so the check valve does nothing unless the bulb is squeezed.
