1970 85hp V4. Idles rough, seems to be only running on 3 Cyl until 3Krpm. Then runs
great.

Cyl 1,2,3 plug damp when removed. Cylinder 4 plug is dry. Surface gap plugs. Good
spark on all 4.

Compression is 115psi across the board.

Engine runs worse with #4 plug out and grounded.

Point gap set wider than spec cause it runs much better that way. About 2 clicks
(indexed screw) beyond .01

#4 plug is not cleaned (as in water leak) just dry.

I've pulled the low speed idle screws, cleaned em, sprayed carb cleaner
in the hole, and reset low speed idle. Plug still dry.

Carb rebuild kit is on the way. Also new high speed jets are ordered.

Am I correct in assuming dry plug == lean?

I worry about running the points too far open, what am I risking?

Thanks for your time,
Mike

Other things remaining unchanged you advance
the timing when you open the gap.You also shorten the time the points are closed which would tend to lower the voltage build up in the coil.
How much ???? Search me.Timing and Syncronization
are 2 things you need to check. Hope you are
working with a manual.

Yep, have Seloc, and OMC original service manual and parts list. Find that both of
the manuals are useful.

The puzzle with the point gap is that it has such a large effect on Idle speed behavior.
Frankly I'm just not smart enough to come up with a reasonable explanation of why.
I'ts not just the advance as that is basically all the throttle does for the first part of it's
throw, and one would expect the normal point gap to smooth out to the current point
gaps performance at a given RPM. Doesn't happen, rough all the way to 3Krpm.

If I was somehow helping a weak amplifier by leaving the points open longer, I wouldn't
expect to see troubles at low RPM, only high.

As far as misting premix into carb it makes me nervous :) , but I'll try it.

Mike
