I will be cruising in European waters in the very near future. Does anybody know if I will be required to obtain a GMDSS(DSC) operator's license for my DSC radio? I know that as long as I remain in U.S. waters I am not required to have one. If I do need one, can I obtain the necessary training on line? Appreciate any help you can give.

Re: DSC operator’s license requirement

You do not need to met GMDSS requirements (under STCW) unless you are commercial and over 300 Gross Tons. You do need a ship's station license (voluntary) to use a vhf in a foreign country. If you want to use the DSC radio to best capacity, make sure you get an MMSI through the FCC as well.

The GMDSS requirements get you an operator's license, not a ship station license.
