DT 65 problems

I have an 89' DT65 that had some problems this weekend. The motor started fine but idled a little rough in neutral. Then when I put it in forward, it would push around with just a little throttle but when I increased the throttle it would bog down and if I didn't come back off of the throttle it would shut down. It was able to power up on a few occasions. I figure that problem may be gas related...the gas was fresh...maybe a little too much sea foam added to the mix?

The next problem was that the tell-tale was just dribbling for most of the trip. I tried to clean it out thinking it was clogged but it didn't change much. While I was waiting to trailer it I throttled it up in Neutral and the tell-tale started working great again, it even worked well when I was flushing it after I got home. The water pump was changed last year by the person I bought it from...maybe needs to be looked at? Impeller could be malfunctioning? Any ideas?

The last problem was when I did finally get it to throttle up in gear, the RPMs would move up slowly and then it felt like the prop was spinning. The RPMs kept going up but the boat slowed down with little if any propulsion.

Any advice would be appreciated. And sorry James for posting this in the other thread...I am new here, don't want mess anything up and thanks for all your help on the last issue I had.

Re: DT 65 problems

Time to replace the impellar, a good carb rebuild and also change the fuel pump diaphragm then you will be good to go ......

Thanks a ton Deejaycee. For someone who has never taken a motor apart would any of those things be out of my "mechanical grasp"? I'd love to do it all my self but it sounds like a carb rebuild could be tricky. I guess the original manual from brownspoint.com would help out a lot.

Re: DT 65 problems

Got you on your own thread. Sounds like you use the motor in salt water. When you do the impeller, check the pump plate and housing for scoring. May need to replace those also. As for the prop, pull it off and check if the rubber hub is damaged. if it is a fixed hub look for swelling of the rubber at the inside of the prop. If it is swollen it probably is defective. The splined removable type hub can be examined for damage by pulling it out.
The info you have regarding fuel system is good but dont use the spray type carb cleaner. You can damage carb parts. Go get the 1Gal carb and parts cleaning kit made by the manuf' of Gunk products. The carbs will need to be stripped and please follow the directions on the can.
Good luck and good boating.
