DT140 heard noise, won't start

Hello all. New poster. I have a Suzuki DT140. I started it last night and it ran fine for a minute. I heard a "clack" sound followed by a "zzzzmmmmmmmm" sound. Immediately afterwards, the motor quit running. The "zzzzmmmmmmm" sound was obviosly something spinning freely. It will now start up for a fraction of a second and stop. Could I have broke a "flywheel key" ? Any thoughts? Please reply or contact me @ huntski4me@hotmail.com. I am new to boating and would like someone to point me in the right direction. Have torn down many a car engine but not an outboard.

Hi,<br />If You will start to take apart your DT140 I suggest You check out parts list at brownspoint.com so you can see what is behind the "surface" before you start. They also have shop manual and any spare part you may need for your Suzuki. Hopefully you will get answers here what to look for as a probably cause of the problem.<br /><br />/Bo

If you suspect your flywheel key (which I don't) turn the flywheel to the pointer for TDC. #1 piston should be at TDC as well. Run a compression check. Look for any loose externals...OR a hole in the block. Tearing something apart to find the cause ought to be the LAST thing you do.

I doubt your flywheel keys have anything to do with this, the only thing that would spin freely, would be the starter motor, if you swing the motor does the starter kick in? And if so, does it kick out when the engine starts?

Got a Suzuki mechanic on the phone today. Dumped everything in the water separator. Found water and rust. Replaced and primed w/ fresh gas. Starts up and runs. Am chanmging out the plugs and my fuel filter and putting a couple bottles of dry gas in the tank. Very wierd as I vividly remember the noise. The mechanic said he's been doing this for 15 years and has never seen a Suzuki wear out a flywheel key.
