I would disconnect the cable at the motor and check for adjustment.You can also try shifting CAREFULLY and see if it goes into gear by manually shifting at eng.If you engine is older.yamaha had issues with the shift shafts rusting and ten flexing to the poit they didnt shift properly,which,led to total failure.You might try and see if the shaft looks ruty and worn where it becomes visable by the gearcase -midsection connection,or take the lowerunit off and check where the shiftshaft adjoins the coupler that slides over the shaft stub in the lower
