Dt85 Stalling Problem

I own a 1985 (i think) dt85 suzuki in which i put on my 18' ranger bass boat. I was having a problem with it going into gear. I took the lower unit off and messed with the shift rod, put the lower unit back on, and now it is going into gear fine. but the problem is, when it shifts into gear, it stalls out (within 2-4 seconds it stalls out). it seems to idle fine but i have to inject gas into the carbs to get it to fire. it will just turn over and will not start if I do not put gas directly into the carbs. so I am having a problem getting it to fire and I am having a problem getting it to go without stalling. i am only 18, i don't know much about boat motors. any help is appreciated. thank you

Re: Dt85 Stalling Problem

Your carbs may need a rebuild or a good cleaning. Your fuel pump could be bad also. Try squeezing the primer bulb and see if that changes anything while you are running. If it runs by doing so your fuel pump is probably bad. The bulb should fill with gas and become hard. If after the bulb is pumped full of gas if it collapses, (sucks in) than your pump is probably ok and you probably have a venting problem on your gas tank or a clogged line. Try these first and tell us the results. Good Luck!

Re: Dt85 Stalling Problem

I just got done cleaning the carbs, they seemed pretty clean before i sprayed them down with carb and choke, i successfully put the carbs back on, and checked the fuel lines up to the carbs and they are not clogged at all. i cleaned out my fuel filter, it was a little dirty. the bulb seemed to be working well. and it would not start until I injected gas into the carbs myself. I'm thinking maybe something with the fuel pump might be going wrong? and also, I don't have a tach hooked up, (if you could tell me how to hook one up that would be great) but it seems like the motor is running on really low rpm's and i think that is why it was stalling out once i put it into gear, is there any way i can turn the rpm's up a little? thank you for the help.

There is an idle adjustment plate with a bolt that you loosen and slide to adjust the idle under the cowling near where the throttle cable hooks up. i would only make 1/4" adjustments at a time and see how it does. Did you try pumping the bulb while it was running?

Re: Dt85 Stalling Problem

thank you, that helped a lot. somewhere around the lines of messing with the idle i got it to start up without injecting gas into the carbs. i don't know if it will still stall out after being put into gear because i don't have muffs, i just use a garbage can that I fill up with water. i successfully hooked up my tach. I have two more questions, what should my dt85 idle at? (RPM wise) and how can I find out the year of this motor? Thank you very much

Re: Dt85 Stalling Problem

I like mine to idle around 900 - 1100 but that's just my preference. You just don't want it so high that it grinds the gears when you put it in gear. When you put it in gear it should be a quick push to engage. Don't baby it by sliding it slowly. That's hard on the gears. The year will be in the serial number. http://store.brownspoint.com/ has listings on parts and motors. look in microFiche parts look-up. Great site. You should find your serial number for the year there. Good Luck!
