Dual Pro Charger SE ?

This is the way my boat is wired with a Dual Pro SE charger connected to each battery. Both batteries are deep cycle. (see attached PiX)

What I would like to do is replace Bat. #1 with a normal battery (for the boat motor) and add my spare deep cycle battery to Bat. #2 in parralel so that my troling motor runs longer.

Here is my ?

Can I connect the battery charger to both deep cycle batteries (Bat. #2) even if that are connected in parallel.

Thank you

Dan

Yes, but keep in mind it will take twice as long to charge both batteries as it does the single. And since you will have a permanent parallel connection, be aware that the weaker of the two batteries will suck the life out of the better battery until the two are equal. And also be aware that every battery cable in this system needs to be at least the same size or larger than the engine battery cables.

Even with both banks connected to the parallel batteries?

That was the whole purpose to reduce the time to charge the two parallel batteries. I would have 20 amp instead of 10 amp going into them.

Maybe I should just keep one bank for the parallel batteries and the other bank for my motor boat battery if its not going to help.

Thx

I missed the point about using both charger outputs for the parallel setup. Yes -- then it would charge in the same time. You of course lose the charging capability for the starting battery but the engine itself should take care of that provided you don't have too many accessories connected to it.

Good to know , thx..

I may buy a small onboard charger for the crank
battery.

Now all I need to know is how many crank, I need
for my 115 mariner..:)

Have a Great Day....

Re: Dual Pro Charger SE ?

You could hook both charger leads to the COM terminal of the switch. To charge the parallel system set the switch to which ever position selects that configuration. When those two batteries are charged, switch to BOTH. All three will now be charged and maintained. If the start battery needs charging, switch to BAT 1 (or whatever position selects that battery). See how versatile a switch is if you know how to use it and make connections correctly. Obviously in the OFF position nothing will charge.

That would be both positive leads right, how about
the negative leads? Where is the best place for it?

Also, do you think the switch can handle 20 amps going
thru it will charging?

And everything else can stay connected the same as the
diagram, right?

I was also wondering since the com is directly connected to the motor and the charger would also be connected there too, when charging is it safe to do so. Don't want to fry anything in the motor or the starter.

Dan

Sorry about all the ?'s :) want to make sure I do it right.

Re: Dual Pro Charger SE ?

The switch must handle much more than 20 amps when the engine is started so yes, it can handle 20 amps. Ground wires go to the ground terminals on the battery. All negative battery terminals need to be connected together.

The large battery cable IS the charging wire from the engine. It IS also the feed for the starter. So current flows both ways on that cable. when the engine is running current from the charging system feeds the switch and from there is goes to whatever battery(ies) you have selected. When starting the engine, the engine sucks power from whatever battery(ies) you have selected. NEVER run the engine with the switch set to OFF. That will fry the regulator. All of the accessories (except the trolling motor) should be fed from the COM terminal on the switch. That way you can select which battery you want to power things.

WARNING: All of the information I've presented will work ONLY IF your wiring is exactly like the diagram shows. If it's not, you need to determine what yoj actually have.

I will double check tommorow, but I am 99.9% sure it is.

Thank you for the detail explanation.
