I was telling my father-in-law about this forum the other day and he asked if i could get some info for him. He has a new Stratus and noticed a dull spot in the gelcoat. He was wondering what the best way to fix this would be. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Re: dull spot in gelcoat

Well, if the dull spot is caused by minor scratches (fender rubs, canvas or plastic cover) you could probably buff it out with some compound. Personally I use Meguiars oxidation remover with a wool buffing pad on slow speed, however don't let the buffing pad stay in the same spot. Move the buffer around and over the area so you don' t burn the gelcoat. You may have to apply the compound and work the area a few times to get it back to a high gloss, but it works very well. If the dull mark is from deeper scratches you may need to first go over it with some wet sanding paper (start with 800 grit and work up to 1500 grit, then finish it off with the buffing compound. That should do it. If the area is smaller than a basketball, it shouldn't take more than 15 - 20 minutes. One word of caution, be careful with the buffer if there is hardware or wires around the dull area. The buffing pad can catch this and either rip out the wiring, or possibly take you for a ride. If the area is wide open, it's a piece of cake to fix.. Hope this helps!

How new is new ? like within the warranty period ?

What is the cause of the dull spot.. It could be from the factory not finishing something before it got shipped out. ( meaning the dealer should handle this at no cost ).

If you see little swirls in the dull spot its from the factory more then likely ..

Got pics or more info would help greatly :) ..

Yacht Dr., It is brand new. However, the boat was purchased in Florida Where he fishes during the winter and was pulled back to Indiana. He had purchased the boat at the marina where he stays and the temporary cover he used when he pulled it home came loose and dulled two spots. Bummer
