Dumb ? about motor mounting

I am a novice at boating and I am having trouble with water spray traveling up my motor shaft and back into the transom. Is it possible to move the motor up on the transom so that the L-shape motor bracket no longer attaches to the transom. All that will be holding the motor to the transom is the 4 mounting bolts.

The motor is a 40 hp Mariner 4cyl and is mounted on a 1648 Alweld aluminum tunnel hull boat with all-metal transom. Right now the cavitation plate is located half way between the bottom of the hull and the top of the tunnel.

I have considered a manual jackplate, but if I can safely run the motor mounted higher on the transom without one, I would like to go that route.

The 4 bolts are whats holding it now. Youll be fine.

And BTW -- you are correct that if its mounted too low a spray of water will come right on in. Not a dumb ?.

Thanks Dhadley.

On a side note, my company is performing some work to the new Walmart Distribution center near you guys in Arcadia. I work for a commercial refrigeration contractor as an engineer. I hoipe everything is getting back in order down there after Charley. Take care and God Bless.

Thanks UNCC. It'll be a long time before things get back to "normal" but we'll be OK.

Thanks for the kind words.
