I have a 898 set up for my boat and one of the manifolds are missing. should I use the set of aluminum manifolds and risers and run through the transom or look for a newer used set of center rise manifolds. just one of the options I have

Re: dumb exhaust question

Hey just went through a lengthy discussion on a very similar item. Here is the link where aChris did a great job with showing the cooling system
http://forums.iboats.com/mercruiser-i-o-inboard-engines-outdrives/overheating-633114-3.html

In the 3rd page you can see the routing. My thought would be to replace both with new style manifolds and elbows then re-run hoses. Would like to see your setup (Pics please) to verify we are discussing a similar issue

Those drawings are for a Ford engine (888), this OP has a GM (898), although very similar, the thermostat housing hoses are different. Here's a set of drawing I did for someone to convert from the older 'log' style manifolds to the latest 'dry-joint' centre rise manifolds. Although these drawings are labelled '228', the only difference between your 898 and the 228 is a 2 bbl carb vs 4 bbl. http://forums.iboats.com/mercruiser...center-riser-question-602778.html#post4204080

And yes, a set of photos would be very helpful.

Re: dumb exhaust question

Personally, I'd go to dry-joint manifolds... For those, and a full closed cooling system, use block-off gaskets between manifold and elbow.
