dumb move - brief start w/o oil

ok, so, this fall when winterizing, I changed the oil amidst many distractions. I ended up starting my 4.3 without oil for 3-4 seconds, tops. I filled her up and let it run a while on the muffs and everything sounded fine. Advice? (yes, I know it was boneheaded, please keep it constructive, thanks!). Change oil and filter this spring at de-winterization, or is this overthinking it?

If there was in fact some engine damage from running for 3-4 seconds without oil, changing the oil again in the spring is not going to fix the damage. The oil is fresh now, and will be still fresh when you fire the boat again in the spring.

No need to waste oil.

I think you are going to be OK.

Oh God... another oil thread coming....

You didn't hurt it in 4 seconds if that's all it was.

While I'm no mechanical engineer, I would guess that there was enough residual oil remaining on the moving parts to provide a minimum of protection for the 3-4 seconds you suggest...that is if you were at idle. If you were running and gunning at say, 4,000 rpms, you would have likely shortened that engines life span considerably. Look at it another way...every time you start a cold automobile engine, it takes at least 2-3 seconds for the oil to get pumped up into the valve train assembly, and this process occurs over and over again throughout the life of the motor without it being destroyed. I agree with the others...your engine will live to see another day on the water. :)

You most likely did not hurt the engine at all .....IF you REALLY only ran it 3-4 sec. In a cold soaked engine it can take that long for the oil pressure to come up everywhere......

Why would you change the oil again before you start it next spring? Didn't you just change it? nothing is going to happen to the new/clean oil in 9 months or so........don't worry about it.

4 secs - you're fine. Longer - say goodbye to your bearings.

Whether or not your engine is ok depends on what kind of oil you were running... no just kidding. You will be fine. Like others have said, most engines are running dry for the first couple seconds. Don't sweat it thru the winter. All will be ok come spring :)

Re: dumb move - brief start w/o oil

Years ago while working for a small repair gararge, I learned something about this situation you almost got yourself into. First off, your engine and it's bearings will be fine! 3-4 seconds is nothing. However, my boss at the time who was a factory GM trained mechanic with 40 years of experience told me some scary situations. Many people bring their cars & trucks to him. He works on them all. He told me that some of the newer cars like Lexus and BMW's will run without oil and make ZERO bearing noise. Bearing noise will be a rattling/banging noise when you start the engine without oil. The bearings have an oil clearance in them to allow the oil to suspend inbetween the crank and the bearing. Thus, running without oil the crank will bang against the clearance inside the bearing. Now, a new engine may not make any bearing noise when started without oil. But most likely it will. So running the engine for 3 to 5 seconds, then hearing the noise realizing there is no oil happens more than you think in a repair garage. The difference is, on better quality engines, you will not hear the bearing wrap at all! Mechanics have driven the cars out of the gararge, parked them, only to realize there is no oil in the car!. I know what some dreamers on here will say. "Not my mechanic!" Yeah, it happens more than you think. Just like your money. You care more about it than any stock broker ever will. So, you should be in control of your money. Cars, boats whatever, it's the same thing. No mechanic will care and do as good a job as someone who loves and cares for their vehicle.

So don't feel bad. Even the so-called Pro's do this.

Re: dumb move - brief start w/o oil

there was a thread almost exactly like this a couple of years ago. In that thread it was decided to run the new oil for a season and then send it in to be analyzed at a lab. I doubt you did any damage. It's heat that kills engines. You didn't run it long enough or under enough load to fry anything.

+1 for you're fine.

We intentionally froze a motor at the race track once and it took almost 15 minutes w/o oil at 5k rpm before the motor stopped. Of course, that was the end game for the motor, the damage started long before it stopped, but even if it ran for 15-20 seconds you're probably still good. There's enough residue left to protect for awhile.

Thanks for the feedback everyone! I've cruised some of the automotive forums and they all say about the same.
