dumb question about water in the cockpit

This might be a dumb question, but since I'm new to owning a boat I thought I'd ask.

My boat sits on the side of my house on a bit of an angle and has old covers for the bow and cockpit. I went away for work and while away we had a few strong storms. I went to uncover it today and noticed my carpet was saturated and due to the boat leaning to a side there were 1" deep puddles along the starboard side. Is this bad to allow to sit like that? I guess normally if it were level the water would find it's way out?

I don't have the money right now for new covers, so instead I plan on leveling the side of the house to allow the boat to sit level. I also plan on getting a water proof tarp to throw over it and just use bungee cords to hold it down.

Also, those old covers really suck!! I spent 2 days cleaning the interior and waxing the exterior. Those covers are so dirty that after the rain it looks like it did before washing and waxing everything!!

The "boat while away position" should be on a level surface with the bow up as far as possible. With your transom plug out any excess water will simply drain out.
And yes, any water left in your boat certainly has the ability to cause a lot of problems. Mold and mildew being one and the chance of wood starting to rot another. Keep her as dry as possible and you'll have a happy boat. :D

I have to agree. No matter how impenetrable boat surfaces can seem, water has a funny way of wreaking havoc. Always keep your baby dry until ready for use.

Thanks for the input guys. Looks like I'm going to have to get the shovel out and level the area where I park it. Oi!
