Got a 48hp Johnson and the question is
Does the compartment where the water pump and shift lever are get flooded when running I assume yes but the previous owner did everything possible not too
They silicone everything especially the rubber on top of the impeller housing part that goes in the tube and where that rubber attaches to the housing
I’m putting everything new but I don’t expect it not to leak it doesn’t look like it’s designed to.
It shouldn’t leak where the seals and o-ring goes to me.

no silicone needed anywhere. shift and drive shaft are sealed by they respective seals or o-ring for the shift shaft as you found out and suspected

the water tube going up just fits in a rubber gromet no silicone needed

Need a model # of this motor.------Simply because the 89 and newer models do not even use a water tube ( brass ) to feed water to the power head.

I call it a tube but it’s part of the upper housing (cast in) but now I can’t get the impeller to move at all 2 flat head screw driver and DW40 and it won’t move a millimetre is it suppose to just slip off?
I seem that it’s all suprise in this motor lol
Can’t wait to see how easy the drive shaft bearing housing will come out!
Thanks guys
