Dumb question but need answer quick

Which way does the thermostat go? Spring up or down? Since there was not one in there I cannot just put it the way it was.
1980 Omc 140 hp.

That's what I was afraid of. Mine won't just drop in the hole. Are they pretty tight to get in sometimes?

Depends on corrosion of course. How exactly is it binding up?

Took a dremel tool to grind excess corrosion so it would fit and did a compression test. Going from bow to stern, meaning 1 is toward the the bow 4 being toward the stern. 1= 125 psi 2=125 psi 3=130 psi 4=130 psi. What do you guys think? Is that good?
