As some of you may remember, I pulled out the old carpet and coated the interior of my 19' BlueWave in March of '04.

It looked great in the beginning (the pics make it look a bit brighter than it actually was). However, after a single weekend in the sun, I began to notice a tiny bit of fade on the blue color. After the first weekend, I took it to rinse it off, and noticed some of the blue pigment rinsing away with the water. The sun had already damaged it enough to cause the coating to almost 'chalk' up...crazy!

You can see how the light grey is still shiny (it's dirty, but shiny), and the blue has completely faded to a turqoise. You can even see on the sides that the blue has disappeared completely in some areas, and let some of the grey show through (I coated the floor first, then the sides to cover up any overspray.) It was to the point that i could see fiberglass through the blue color.

Apparently, they sent me the light grey color in UV Resistant, like I ordered, and the Dark Blue in NON-UV resistant, unlike I ordered. They claimed that the ordered showed it this way - but why would I order one UV color and one NON-UV color?!?!?.

Note - this boat was GARAGE KEPT, and still faded out terribly in less than a few months, with maybe 3-4 weekend trips without cover.

Long story short - with some help from durabak, I am re-coating the interior of my boat. This time, I ordered dark grey for the floor (to help hide some of the dirt/grime), and again with the blue on the decks.

I will say that the adhesion I achieved with the original coating was excellent. I am having trouble getting it to come off the fiberglass, which is a good thing for durability! I found a few areas around the center console, which is the UV resistant light grey, where I didn't sand, and the edge of the coating was starting to lift/roll up a bit. I began to peel it off, and it was easy where not sanded - but the sanded areas are adhered so well that pulling the coating up will pull off a thin layer of glass in some areas. I don't think it would've ever peeled on its own!

The blue, however, is so thin that there isn't anything to peel. The rubber granules are basically adhered to the glass and there isn't much else. I am just scuffing up the blue areas, and trying to peel off all of the light grey.

Hopefully this weekend I will have it all prepped and ready for a re-coat.

Check back for more pictures of the 2nd go-around, and updates on how it is holding up this time. Hopefully I'll be satisfied and wont have to find an alternative for my 3rd interior refinishing job. Sometimes i wish I would've just left the carpet in it

Moral of the story - if you plan to use Durabak (or any polyurethane coating), MAKE SURE IT IS UV RESISTANT!!

SQ
