As some of you may remember, I pulled out the old carpet and coated the interior of my 19' BlueWave in March of '04.

It looked great in the beginning (the pics make it look a bit brighter than it actually was). However, after a single weekend in the sun, I began to notice a tiny bit of fade on the blue color. After the first weekend, I took it to rinse it off, and noticed some of the blue pigment rinsing away with the water. The sun had already damaged it enough to cause the coating to almost 'chalk' up...crazy!

You can see how the light grey is still shiny (it's dirty, but shiny), and the blue has completely faded to a turqoise. You can even see on the sides that the blue has disappeared completely in some areas, and let some of the grey show through (I coated the floor first, then the sides to cover up any overspray.) It was to the point that i could see fiberglass through the blue color.

Apparently, they sent me the light grey color in UV Resistant, like I ordered, and the Dark Blue in NON-UV resistant, unlike I ordered. They claimed that the ordered showed it this way - but why would I order one UV color and one NON-UV color?!?!?.

Note - this boat was GARAGE KEPT, and still faded out terribly in less than a few months, with maybe 3-4 weekend trips without cover.

Long story short - with some help from durabak, I am re-coating the interior of my boat. This time, I ordered dark grey for the floor (to help hide some of the dirt/grime), and again with the blue on the decks.

I will say that the adhesion I achieved with the original coating was excellent. I am having trouble getting it to come off the fiberglass, which is a good thing for durability! I found a few areas around the center console, which is the UV resistant light grey, where I didn't sand, and the edge of the coating was starting to lift/roll up a bit. I began to peel it off, and it was easy where not sanded - but the sanded areas are adhered so well that pulling the coating up will pull off a thin layer of glass in some areas. I don't think it would've ever peeled on its own!

The blue, however, is so thin that there isn't anything to peel. The rubber granules are basically adhered to the glass and there isn't much else. I am just scuffing up the blue areas, and trying to peel off all of the light grey.

Hopefully this weekend I will have it all prepped and ready for a re-coat.

Check back for more pictures of the 2nd go-around, and updates on how it is holding up this time. Hopefully I'll be satisfied and wont have to find an alternative for my 3rd interior refinishing job. Sometimes i wish I would've just left the carpet in it

Moral of the story - if you plan to use Durabak (or any polyurethane coating), MAKE SURE IT IS UV RESISTANT!!

SQ

I'm not really sure why they'd make or sell a version of this product that wasn't UV resistant. There must be some advantages to the non-UV formulation but I can't imagine what they'd be.

Good luck with it.

Terry,

I asked the same question - what point is there to sell a bedliner/non-slip coating that wasn't UV resistant?

Their short answer was because a lot of people use it indoors in buildings/ships, and they don't require the UV resistance, which saves them money.

The first thing they asked when I ordered it the first time was "What will you be using it for". I told them for coating the decks of a boat, so they should've know UV. Oh well, both of our faults - hopefully round two goes in my favor.

SQ

Bill P.,

My pleasure. Look for more updated pics as work progresses. Here's some from yesterday and today. The ones from today show a lot of dust - forgot to sweep it first!

5-3-06; Trying to scrape/peel off the light grey. It is stuck down pretty good! Lots of work with a putty knife/razor blade. I should've just sanded it!

Tonight's Pics:

5-5-06; Front deck sanded - more sanding on sides.

Notice the color difference where I removed the seat base. Lots of fade!

It's getting there! Should have it completely sanded tomorrow, maybe even apply the coating. Worst case - it will be coated on Sunday. Then time for re-assembly (with new wiring and gauges, cleats, etc - so it may take a few weeks).

Once again - come back tomorrow if you want to see more pics of the progress (if you can call it that! hah!) ;)

SQ

5-6-06; Here's a few of the boat completely sanded, rinsed off, and ready for the coating. I only had to 'scuff' the blue parts, although I did sand a lot of it off. If it peeled at all, even just rolled a little on the edge, I sanded it off until it stopped:

5-8-06; Here's the finished coating! Took me about 4 or 5 hrs with the help of Garrett for the first few hours. I still have to reassemble it, obviously, but you get the idea:

Finished it up this weekend and took it to the lake!

Still need to replace the icechest seats, re-upholster them, re-install my battery cutoff switch, and replace my gauges (they work, just look like crap due to the sun cracking the paint/etc.).

Getting there!

SQ

Re: Durabak - Round II

Overall, would you recomend the Durabak? I am plan on putting some kind of bedliner down on the floor of my boat, but cannot deciede which one.

I got "line-x" sprayed in the bed of my truck a couple months ago and love it. Its extremly durable and looks really nice. I also like how it is very thick and would cover up a lot of imperfections in my fiberglass.

The shop that sprayed my truck has done tons of boat floors before and I saw a few of them and they turned out really nice. The only think I don't like is the price, which would be around $700.

I could roll on Durabak or Hurculiner or something for under $300. I don't know if it would hold up as well as the line-x though, and line-x has a lifetime guarentee on it, so if it ever chipped or anything, they would fix it for free.

What do you guys think I should do?

Also, I don't know what color to go with. I would like white but am skeptical because I hear it shows ALOT of dirt.

Thanks

Greg

Re: Durabak - Round II

Greg Mercer,

I happened to come across some of your posts that include pictures of your boat, which is the exact same boat as I have. 1993 Wellcraft Excel 18 I/O bow rider with a Volvo Penta 120 HO 4 banger. I am about to begin tearing out the seats so I can replace the floor & some of the upholstery. If you don't mind, I would like to get your opinion on some ideas.
johnkirk4@sbcglobal.net

Thanks,

John

Ya, I know black gets a lot hotter than lighter colors. What I was trying to say is I can't deceide between white and grey.

Greg

Gray gets pretty toasty also. I put light gray in a fishing boat and never went barefoot in it again.

On the other hand, this is Texas also, its a little warmer than Maryland in the summer.

Re: Durabak - Round II

I would recommend it, but MAKE SURE IT IS UV RESISTANT!

Also...any color is hot, even the carpet was hot.

The light grey is no cooler than the dark grey I used this time.

Thanks for the compliments, I'm happy with it (will post again after a few months to see how it is holding up to the sun).

SQ
