I'll start off by saying im new to the boat world and not super knowledgeable at this point. Im potentially purchasing a late 50's, early sixty's duratech S15R boat. It currently has an solid vintage evinrude 18hp 2 stroke. I was wondering what the largest safest size motor I could put on it, and would it need to be a 2 stroke or 4, or would it not matter. I was hoping to be able to do some tubing with it and maybe waterskiing?? Also would the transome hold up to it? Would I need a short shaft or long shaft, or not matter?

Sure its not an S15A?

Looks like an S15A is a 15in transom (short shaft) and a 40hp is the max rated motor.

Tubing, yes, if the transom plywood is in great shape.

Lots of people skied (w 2 skis) behind similar boats in the 50s 60s and 70s w 30hp to 40hp outboards.

A 225lb+ slalom skier isnt likely to enjoy it, IF they can even get up. Plus they will likely jerk the boat around quite a bit carving high speed corners. Possibly enough to destablize the boat, IMO.

Welcome to iboats, and lets see some pix

I have pulled a few of these light weight small aluminum boats up on their gunwales while slalom skiing behind them. No problem on 2 skiis
