I'm looking at a fishing boat that is a 99 Smokercraft Stinger 150, that has a 2013 E-tec 40 on it. If I'm not mistaken those are direct injection 2 strokes. I remember some years ago, when I lived in CA, that the E-tec and the Optimax were the only 2 strokes allowed to be sold in CA. Are they better on fuel than a carbed 2 stroke? Probably not as fuel efficient as a 4 stroke, tho? Do they last and are they reliable? Do ya have to mix the oil/fuel? That's ok ,as I have several 2 stroke dirt bikes.

ETECs burn about 40-50% less gas .. my 2005 - 75hp runs cheaper than my old merc 500 carb it burns .6L /hr trolling. next to no smoke/smell using xd100 oil at xd100 setting.... if not on XD-100 setting it will used either tcw3 or XD100.. .. theengin can run with no oil for a while in safe mode (rpm around 1200 )

my 2005 was EPA cerified no oil is burnt in the fuel in 2013 models all is injected to internals undr EMM control

do they last....??? I am going 18 years now great engines for me anyway ! but like all brands a certain % bomb out but a lot of failures are CPU/EMM failures due to poor DC batt. connections. oiling & fuel everything is pretty much computer controlled with the EMM dropping RPMs in case of tolerable problems and shut downs on major issues.

Diagnostic software is available to trouble shoot and keeps history file of all recordable issues so get a log dump before on any purchase to check for past and current (active) fault codes . see link to manuals find 2010 40hp and download if need be

EV diagnostic is available at dealers or amazon Always do a test run

visit the ETEC User board ...feel free to ask questions about any concern you have

An E-tec behaves like a 4 stroke during the compression phase and part of the power stroke.----E-tec cannot run on a 50:1 mix.----It will run , but not for long !!

The early ETEC like my 2005 mixed some xd100 in the fuel line which was good to oil the HP pump & injectors it seems. They later stopped that oiling function.

In effect , it is now suggested to mix some... oil in the fuel ( search Oly's brew) to oil the HP pump and prevent rusting.

true or not ?? can't say I am just glad my early version injects some... oil

50/1 oil fuel would probably gum up the injector.

with xd-100 there is next to no smoke or smell on a ETEC ... just more black flies .

Another etec owner (2009 115 950hrs)
From what I was told less pollution and better gas mileage then a four stroke....they might have stretched the truth here but if you have never had one and are used to old 2 strokes they are night and day. Amazing really.

Good luck on your purchase and watch this video.

Thanks all for the replies. I put a deposit down on the boat today, pending a test drive tomorrow or sunday. The owner says he runs xd100 oil in it. I feel pretty good about the motor (especially now LOL) only being 10 years old. It's been in the same family since the motor was only a couple years old. For 5500 it has a trolling motor that was new about 18 months ago, $750, and it has a new lithium battery. Has an extra prop for high elevation. The boat is showing its age, but it's not trashed. It needs a really good, deep cleaning. Which is what exactly what I'll do. As I always do with used cars, trucks, boats, ets. I've had a half dozen boats in my time. But, I haven't had one in about 15 years or so. In 2007 I bought a dirt bike, and ever since my fishing has taken a back seat. But now at 57, I still ride, but, fishing seems a lot less painful! LOL
The prices I see for used boats in nuts these days. Like most everything else... But, last saturday I went in to a local boat shop that had an 03 Lund 1440 with a 2018 Merc 40 4 stroke for sale on consignment. Very nice boat. Well kept. My wife liked it right away. I got a hold of the owner and made and offer. He didn't get back to me until monday morning. So, I called him on my lunch break and told him after work I would go over to the shop and put a deposit on it until we can go for a test. When I got there, someone came and got it just 2 hours earlier. DOH! So, I jumped on this one. It seems like a pretty good deal.

it is critical for you to get a log dump of the memory on the EMM . Not to spoil your hopes but the history log would tell you more than just looks.

it will tell you how & when the owner took care of things like clearing an overheat condition with an new impeller, getting repeat alarms etc....

here is what a report looks like. if you do get one put it in a file sharing site like dropbox and post the link on the ETEC user board for expert opinions.

Notice my report excessive code 38 NO OIL eventually cleared with a SW upgrade and a new oil pump in my year 7 of ownership. notice the temperature log of the EMM itself.

Thanks for the very useful advice, cm. I'll get one of those scanners ordered up. I looked thru your diagnostic briefly. Alot of it I don't understand. Yet. I'll study it a bit more today. It's in my computer in the garage.
But we took the boat for a ride yesterday. I started it and backed it off the trailer. It fired right up for a couple of seconds and then it started and purred like a kitten. With 3 of us in the boat and the guys full size dog, it got right up on plane quickly. I was a bit surprised. I can't bring it home until Saturday as the guy works out of town and I get the cash together. As soon as I get it home it will get completely emptied out and a good deep clean inside and I'll buff/ wax the outside, as well as some attention to the trailer. The wheels have grease slung all over them and I don't like that look at all. LOL
I'm excited!!!!

Nice rig... congrats . TLC with a vacum , paint touch ups on nicks (I use dollar store fingernail polish at $1 a bottle... lots of colors to chosse from) & some good car wax will do wonders My 75hp gets 2 wax jobs per year !

EV diagnostics runs best on a low cost windows laptop with NO ELECTRICAL connection from the outside world when hooked up to your EMM !!

a qwick bearing job and you are all set to go after cleaning out the old fuel (if internal) . If you do not have a 10 micron water separator filter you should get one. ETECs and injectors want CLEAN FUEL !!! Impeller should be replaced every 3 years of so.

EV diagnostic sw in my case... has been mostly for observation purposes of the Engine's codes. An important aspect of EV diag. is the auto-saving of EDF engine date file in case it is ever needed in the future to change EMM or restore the EMM should something happen. it provides coefficient file info on the injectors ....

you can readup on this on the file sent above.

here is a informative utube on injector replacement should... it ever become necessary .... mine havebeen good 18 years !!!

Congrats on the new toys !! Last summer, I had to downsize and picked up a 16' Sylvan side console, layed out similiar to yours and I love it !! Mine has a Classic Merc 40 hp two stroke and pushes my boat at 31 plus mph by the gps. I really like the side console, hope you enjoy your boat as much as I have mine ...some extra pics after you get it all spit shinned !!!!

Sorry I haven't got back sooner. We had some nice weather finally for the entire weekend! I was busy..
Thats a nice boat Crosbyman. That boat must go pretty good with a 75 on it. I was checking out the data sheet that you put up. I aint had much book learnin, but it looks like your engine speed profile shows %62 of your time was at 1000 rpm or less. A lot a trolling I'm guessing. Engine temp looks like most of the time at about 150. And the EMM I don't know what the EMM is. Engine faults I see a oil pressure pulses not detected...so that's why you replaced the oil pump? What is the deal with the battery voltage too high?

EMM is the ETEC computer that controls all functions. Download yourself a manual from the google site select a year version as close as possible ex: 2010 . Everything you need to know in in there.

62% yes I troll a lot :) No oil code 38 was a chronic flaw in the early ETECS and BRP solve it by reducing the SW critical event count levels before crying wolf !!!
the oil pump replacement was part of the solution.

high battery level no a big concern could have been on charge ??

I get about 32-35 mph fast enough for me . the boat is rated 90HP
It is rumored that the ETEC 75hp actually cranks out 83hp.

I have a 2hp Suzuki that I think I'll attach to use for trolling. Saves wear and tear on the expensive stuff. I used this Suzuki on an inflatable for a while, but, it finally got tossed out last year. I picked up this Perch last summer and I use it in the little backwater sloughs on the payette and snake rivers. I have a Minnkota for it now. That's much easier than the gas motor.

I fabricated this hitch for the back of the toy hauler and finished it yesterday. Picked up the wiring for it today. Still have to finish that.

I have a cousin to your Suzuki motor, I have the 2.2 hp Mercury version. Mine runs great, starts second pull most every time. Use it to push my 16' SC and then use my bow mount trolling motor to steer while the merc is locked straight ahead. Love my little motor !!

So, I got Smoky home yesterday. Didn't get to spend as much time cleaning up as I wanted to. But I got one side, the transom, and the engine cover buffed out. Cleans up pretty good. I used an old pad on the green part, then switched to a new one and went over it again, then switched to another new one and did the beige paint.
Its nice that it's light enough that I can move it around with the quad. Probably even be able to launch it from a shoreline if needed.

I dont like this line of rod holders to the side like that. I'm gonna remove them and try to find some plastic or s.s plug to put in the holes.
