Looking at Evinrude E-Tec 50 2003 year, looks as though the gearbox is not original and props would back this up, what are these engines like and is there anything to look out for, thanks guys, Deerhound.

They were excellent motors right from the git-go. What makes you think the lower unit is not original. Those engines have huge props due to gearing which is 2.67:1 as I remember. They can be programmed by the dealer to use regular two stroke oil or the expensive stuff intended for use with this engine. Do not use TCW3 if the engine is programmed for the special oil. You will need to determine which way its set up.

Thank you for information, the gearbox is a different colour of paint not same dark blue, one prop has almost half a blade missing whilst other has fair bit damage, it also will not go into reverse and on adjusting cable very slightly it prevents it from going into either forward or reverse, may ofcourse just need set up properly, does boat need taken to dealer to plug into computer to determine which oil it is on? I note the white check up gauge. JBD

yes it has to go to an E-Tec certified dealer to tell what oil it's set up for...with a damaged prop evident-I'd have the lower unit checked as well8)

I would go one step farther -- like stepping away from this motor. A broken prop on a lower unit that has already been replaced would indicate this engine is for sale for a reason.

I would have it checked out properly by a dealer, check compression, gear oil,get a cody of the engine history.how much is this motor & got any pictures or model & serial numbers.
