Could someone please tell me the difference between the E-tec H.O. engines and the engines of the same H.P> rating without the H.O. ???<br /><br /><br />Thanks
Dhadley, could you define "CRISPER" a bit???<br />Does the different gearcase have different ratio???different shape (maybe more hydrodynamicly designed)???<br />Is this crispness a result of more output from tuning in the low rpm & mid range???<br /> Or maybe a result of different gearing???<br /> YES>>>I WANT ONE TOO!!!!!<br /> I figured the H.O. was for high output, I had a TransAm with a 455 H.O.>>>>a beast of a street car!!!
The HO's have the Lightning gearcase. Same ratio, 1.86:1. The port timing is better. Basically the port timing on an HO is like the next hp up. IE -- the 225 HO has the port timing of the 250. While the mapping may not be EXACTLY like a 250 it aint far off. <br /><br />Look in the factory brochures under "horsepower ratings" and it'll say "factory tuned for high performance".<br /><br />Now, we've all heard runmors about the new big Yamaha. And they already have a 300. Their new "biggie" will have some company with some stuff BRP is working on. You aint gonna believe what's coming.....
Hey guys,<br /><br />We have already seen a 300 hp V8. Didn't Merc do it 10 or so years ago? Must not have had the market to support it or they wouldn't have dropped the line (I guess).<br /><br />But the other day I saw a pic (a$$ end view) of a big offshore CS with 3, mind you, 225 or 250's (don't remember but they were the biggies) handing off a transom bracket (solid transom). Man can you emagine the torque moment on that bracket when the driver slams the throttles to the firewall......gotta be awesome.<br /><br />Mark
The V8's were Johnson & Evinrude, 250, 275 and 300 hp. Merc's 300 was a 3.4 liter V6 with a Cosworth block. Didn't work too well. <br /><br />Back in the mid 80's I did a tripple 32' Excalibur. We threw away the 2 454 Chevy Mercruisers and put 3 275 V8's on a bracket. Turned a 53 mph boat into a 70 mph boat.
Dhadley,<br />I had one of those 3.4 litre Mercs on the back of a 23'Robalo CC Fisherman. Good thing the boat had 100 gallon tanks, because that old Merc LOVED the fuel. With fuel lines the size of 1/2 inch PVC pipe, it literally used $100 dollars a day in gas. Needless to say, I was sort of happy when that thing locked up. Put on a 200 Merc and it was much better.
